But once you understand how plants respond to pruning, you'll realize how many problems a well-placed cut can solve.

Pruning Plants - Timing & Cutting

COMMON SHRUB PRUNING PROBLEMS

A Sloppily Chopped Shrub:
DO make selective cuts to neaten up a poorly pruned shrub by stimulating new growth where you want it and removing injured, less vigorous wood. On a branch with a bud facing the direction you want new growth to follow, prune just above that bud at a 45-degree angle.
DON'T leave more than ¼ inch of growth above the bud, as this can encourage rot. Cutting too low can cause the bud to dry out and cutting at a greater angle can create a large surface area that's slow to heal, inviting disease.

Dense On Top But Lifeless Inside:

DO open up the plant with thinning cuts. Thinning cuts remove whole branches of the thickest, oldest wood down to the base or take off large sections of branches back to a main stem, allowing light and air to reach the center of the plant and encouraging healthy new growth.

DON'T remove more than 1/3 of a plant's mass in a year, to keep it vigorous and looking good. Just trimming back branch tips with electric shears results in dense foliage at the top of a shrub and a tangle of weak, leafless branches at the center.

Lopsided Shrub Growth:

DO use heading cuts to spur growth in the right direction. Heading cuts shorten a branch down to a bud you want to encourage to branch out, unlike thinning cuts which remove a branch. Though it seems contrary, prune the shorter side of a lopsided shrub to stimulate growth and even it out. Position the pruner on the part of the stem you want to remove, just above a bud that will grow in the direction you want to encourage.

DON'T remove more than 1/4 of a stem's overall length in any single cut. For shrubs that are dramatically lopsided, use thinning cuts to remove older wood from the longer side as well as heading cuts on the shorter side.

Old Woody, Tangled Shrub:

DO give the plant an overhaul by thinning out the old wood over the course of three years, making room for all new growth. Starting at the base of the shrub, eliminate the centermost branches, taking out no more than 1/3 of the shrub's total mass. Remove another 1/3 of the old wood at the base in years two and three.

DON'T remove more than on1/3 of the shrub's branches at any one time. This preserves enough foliage for the plant to stay robust and generate new growth quickly.

Flowering Shrub with Thin, Leggy Bottom:

DO pinch off the end (or terminal) leaf buds of new branches on broad-leaved evergreens such as rhododendron, azalea, pieris, mountain laurel to encourage side branching on the lower part of the shrub. Like a heading cut, manually removing the terminal leaf bud encourages a dormant bud below to grow, stimulating lush side branching.

DON'T pinch off the flower buds in the process! These are the bigger, fatter buds at the ends of branches.

Environmentally Friendly Deicers for Concrete, Asphalt & Pavers

In winter you work hard to keep your home and your family safe by clearing ice and snow from walkways and the driveway. Safe access means no slips or falls for you, your pets and your guests. So in addition to shovels and snow throwers, ice melt products are probably part of your winter weather preparedness. There is quite a selection of deicer and/or ice melt products available but beware that these deicing chemicals can take a toll on hardscaping as well as landscape plants. This includes not only the living landscape and animals, but also a home’s hardscape – the asphalt, brick, and concrete of the surroundings.

Know Your Option s - The objective of all ice melt products is to reduce the freezing point of water and form brine. Deicers reach this goal in different ways and to varying degrees of success. While there are no perfect eco-friendly deicers, there are better choices you can make. There are three basic types of deicers out there, and each type has their own strengths and weaknesses: chloride-based deicers, acetate-based deicers, and carbohydrate-based deicers (see chart below).

Stay On the Safe Side - A few application guidelines will help to minimize damage to your landscape while using ice melting products. When considering ice melts and deicers, always look at the ingredients and be sure to use and store them according to manufacturer’s directions. First remove the snow and only use these products to melt the final remnants. The most important bit of advice is to USE SPARINGLY to decrease the harmful effects of these products. Apply ice melt using a calibrated spreader to ensure proper, even coverage per the manufacturer’s instructions. For better traction, don’t apply extra deicer - use kitty litter, coarse sand, perlite or some other gritty substance.

Make the Right Choice - When it comes time to choose the right ice melt for the task, it’s important to consider the impact on the environment. The sodium found in these deicing products displaces the plants’ minerals in the soil, and the chloride is absorbed through plant roots and carried to the leaves to wreak havoc on its metabolic processes. Above ground, the drying effects work against a plants’ abilities to withstand cold, dry winter conditions by damaging leaves and twigs. Deicing products containing magnesium are damaging to concrete and pavers to a greater extent than non-magnesium products. Chloride products are all corrosive to some degree and can create visible pockmarks and stains. Do not apply ice melt to wood decks or concrete that is less than a year old.

Mitigate Ice Melt Damage - The good news is that the effects of these chemicals can be reduced or repaired. When the weather warms, flush the hardscape and landscape foliage areas with water several times on a regular schedule. Lime can help repair salt damage in soil and works best if applied after core aeration. The gypsum dislodges the sodium, allowing the normal soil structure to be restored. You can also reduce the negative effects of these ice melt chemicals by combining with sand - a half & half mix can be very effective.

Wondering Which Ice Melt Product to Choose?

There is no one right answer since there are pros and cons to every product. In the end, the deicer for you will be what fits your personal choice and yet still removes the ice. One of our personal favorites is Calcium Magnesium Acetate ice melt for temperatures 20 degrees and above. It is one of the most environmental and pet friendliest deicers commonly available on the market. When you have colder weather, then Magnesium Chloride blends are your best options because they will work in very cold temperatures yet require a lot less product to get the job done. Always consider the impact the deicing product you plan to use has on the surroundings and follow the instructions on the label.

What You Should Do This Winter to Keep Your Yard Looking Great

We spend so very little time in our yards during the winter, mostly because it’s frozen and covered in snow. Taking care of our lawns is probably the last thing on our minds during these cold months, right? But there is actually some winter lawn care advice you should consider to ensure your grass and yard will be healthy and lush once spring arrives.

Clean Up the Yard

If proper clean up isn’t done before the cold season, your lawn will struggle to thrive next year. You’ll be left with uneven grass, dead spots and maybe snow mold or vole trails. If you give your grass a little winter lawn care, you’ll be glad you did and your grass will thank you for it.

Pick It Up - Some of you may look out onto your lawn as the first snow falls and see stray toys, outdoor furniture or a few logs and sticks and think that you’ll grab it in the spring. The extra pressure on your lawn can cause soil compaction and prevent the roots from staying healthy during the harsh winter. Leaving items out there while the snow piles on top suffocates your grass and can create dead, yellow spots. Never allow anyone to park a truck or a car on your lawn because even the smallest vehicle will leave impressions in the soil and kill off the grass that is underneath the tires.

Rake It Up - Leaves that remain over grass through winter can harm the turf crowns. A layer of lawn debris can trap heat and moisture underneath the snow, causing a lawn disease called snow mold which creates minor lawn damage. Voles trails occur when small rodents leave tunnels under the snow-covered lawn debris and eat your plant roots. If you don’t get all the autumn leaves removed from the lawn before the first snow arrives, tackle that task if there’s a thaw at some point. Rake carefully, especially if soil is moist, because grass can pull up easily.

When Bad Weather Is On Its Way...

Winters can often be unpredictable and may put your lawn through some extreme conditions during the course of the season. We do usually have some notice when bad weather is headed our direction so if you know a winter storm or deep freeze is approaching, be prepared for the following:

Knock Down Snow - If we receive significant snow fall, many plants could be strained and damaged from excess accumulation of heavy snow on the branches. Carefully and gently, brush the snow in an upward direction off the limbs and boughs. If they become coated with ice, leave them alone. Trying to break off the ice could cause damage and it should normally melt at a rapid pace, even if the temperatures are below freezing.

Limit Lawn Traffic - Grass is relatively resilient, but it will have a difficult time recovering if a path becomes worn across the lawn. This means it’s a good idea to keep people and vehicles off your lawn when there are hard freezes or snow cover. Keep your walkways clear of ice and snow or other debris so your family and guests won’t be tempted to cut across and trample the yard very often. Repeated walking or driving over frozen lawns can kill turfgrass crowns, which leads to spring bare spots.

Treat Ice Wisely - Applying Ice Melt product to walkways and drives is an effective way to prevent slips and falls throughout the winter season but it can also cause adverse effects to your yard. Ice Melt damage occurs when continued splashing of chemicals onto turf or ornamental plantings increases the salt concentration to a toxic level that will result in weakened or dying plants. To prevent this damage from happening, use products with calcium chloride (not sodium chloride) because it is much less toxic to plants and just as effective. Also try sand or kitty litter which will help prevent slipping as well.

Learn how to choose the perfect Christmas tree - and keep your tree healthy from the beginning...

A Healthy Live Christmas Tree Through the Holiday Season

Follow these tips to keep your live Christmas tree as fresh and safe throughout the season. It's important that you know to appropriately choose and care for your tree so that it can last longer and you can be more environmentally conscious. With proper care, your Christmas tree will last at least five-six weeks or more, bringing warmth and pleasure for your family and friends.

Select Fresh - Try to select a fresh tree by looking for one that is green. One simple test for freshness is to gently grasp a branch between your thumb and forefinger and pull it toward you. The needle should bend and not break and very few should come off in your hand if the tree is fresh. When you shake the tree, there should not be an excessive amount of green needles falling to the ground. Some drop of older, interior needles is normal.

New Cut - As soon as possible, make a fresh cut removing about 1-2 inches of the trunk to expose fresh wood for better water absorption. If you have a pin stand, the retailer should pre-drill your tree and cut off more than an inch, so no further cutting is necessary.

Water Immediately - Right away, watering is critical. A freshly-cut tree can consume a gallon of water in 24 hours! If you are unable to set up your tree inside when you get home, store it in a cool sheltered area away from the wind and sun. But keep in mind a tree with a new cut can go only eight hours without water before absorption is jeopardized.

Check Level Daily - Make sure the tree stand is kept full of water so that it does not dry out. A stand that will hold a 4-inch diameter trunk should hold at least 1 gallon of water after the tree is set up.

Plain Water Only - Research has shown that plain tap water is by far the best thing to have in the tree’s stand. Water holding stands that are kept filled with plain water will extend the freshness of trees for weeks. Some additives can actually be detrimental to a tree’s moisture retention and increase needle loss.

Placement - To reduce fire risk, stand your tree at least 3 feet away from fireplaces, heating ducts, radiators, televisions, and other heat sources making certain not to block exits.

Lighting - When hanging lights, only use indoor lights on your tree and check lights to see that the cords and connections are in good working order. Be careful not to use more than three light sets per extension cord and choose the right ladder for the task. Unplug all lights and decorations when going to bed or when leaving home.

Decorations - Avoid placing breakable ornaments or ones with small, detachable parts on lower tree branches where kids and pets can reach them. Keep potentially poisonous plants like mistletoe, holly berries and amaryllis away from small children and pets as well.

This April and May, walk around your property to check for egg masses on trees, cement blocks, rocks and any other hard surface. Egg masses can also be smashed or burned. Remember that some eggs might be laid at the tops of trees and may not be reachable.

Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula, is a beautiful pest but don’t let looks fool you. It is destructive, dirty and prolific. They are an invasive planthopper native to Asia. It’s important for homeowners to keep an eye out for infestations on their property. It feeds on a wide variety of trees and plants and is capable of causing serious damage to its host, including oozing sap from the trees, wilting, leaf curling, and tree dieback. In addition to plant/tree damage, they excrete a sour smelling, sugary substance that encourages the growth of black sooty mold which can cover leaf surfaces and stunt growth.

Fire Safety Guidelines to Enhance Your All-Season Outdoor Living Space

There is something really special about gathering around a roaring fire pit in the chilly weather, cooking and sharing your meals or just hanging out with loved ones outdoors. However, it’s important to be aware of outdoor fire pit, fireplace and kitchen safety procedures. This helps ensure that you are safe from things like food-borne illnesses, property damage or bodily harm caused by fire related accidents so you can focus on getting the most out of your experience every time. By keeping the following fire precautions in mind, you can significantly reduce your likelihood of any trouble:

Positioning Your Fire

To keep a fire from causing undesirable damage, design a hardscape plan where your fire pit or outdoor kitchen is located at least 10 feet from your home or wooded areas - 25 feet is preferable.
Avoid possible issues by taking time to remove leaves or other combustible materials at least 5 feet away from the fire. This will help reduce the chances of your fire accidentally spreading to other areas.
Do not position a fire pit under a covered porch or low hanging tree branches.
Always place a fire pit on a non-flammable surface, such as patio blocks or concrete. Make sure the surface you want to build it on is level and outside of high traffic areas.
Do not put a fire pit on a wooden deck or directly on grass.
The fire pit should be at least 6 inches deep at the center and 2 feet across, to help keep the embers and flames contained.

Lighting Your Fire

One of the most important safety tips is to keep your fires small and avoid using accelerants. Do not use any flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) to light fires.
Using a commercial fire starter stick with kindling or fat wood is ideal.
Additionally, always check the weather as windy days can be risky, even for a contained fire. If it is too windy, do not light your fire.

Enjoying Your Fire

If you have an active fire going, never leave the area unattended.
Make sure that your guests and family maintain a safe distance from open flames, especially if there are children and pets involved.
Limit the amount of fuel you put in the fire - just use what's necessary to keep it burning gently. A contained fire is easier to manage and significantly reduces the potential for an accident to occur.
Don’t burn soft woods that can “pop” and throw sparks. Consider investing in a wire mesh cover to keep embers inside and help prevent children or pets from falling in.
Don’t put paper products or garbage into the fire. They can easily spark and throw off embers or burning remnants.
Additionally, if you are cooking outdoors, don’t leave any perishable food unattended for prolonged periods of time or you risk bacteria growth.

Extinguishing Your Fire

Always have a flat shovel nearby to extinguish any escaped flames and to put out the fire itself.
When you're ready to put out the fire, completely extinguish it with cold water. Drown it and stir it with the shovel until the embers stop glowing.
To dispose of the ashes in a safe manner, keep a metal can that is used solely for ash storage. Even after 2 or 3 days, ashes can still be hot enough to start a fire.
Do not discard hot ashes in a compost pile, paper bag, cardboard box or anything else that is combustible.
Even if you follow all of these guidelines, accidents still happen. Keep a container of water and a hose nearby in case of an emergency.

Use The Right Rake

Before you purchase a rake, make sure it feels comfortable and easy to use. When you rake with bad posture, your back is going to hurt afterward. The pain will seriously undercut the amount of time you can spend on the job so you’ll find yourself raking more often. Rakes with a narrow spread gather fewer leaves so choose varieties with a wider tine spread. Also, look for rakes labeled “no-clog”- these have angled tines that won’t pierce the leaves and create blockages.

Consider Your Comfort

Remember to stand up straight and switch your leading hand on the rake frequently to prevent arm and shoulder fatigue. If you’re not used to this type of labor, raking can cause painful blisters on your hands. Always wear gloves which should fit snugly but not too tight.
